Carnival Jubilee: A first look at Carnival Cruise Line's new Texas-based ship

carnival jubilee cruise

Meanwhile, lines at the onboard deli and pizzeria counters frequently snake so far down Deck 8 that they block the entrance to seafood restaurant Rudi's Seagrill. One night, as I was dining at Rudi's with some of my travel companions, we joked that the lines were dangerously close to melding with the line for the nearby guest services desk. Grand Central (midship on Decks 6-7-8) is an expanded Atrium concept combining day-to-night entertainment complex with a bar lounge (overlooking the ship's starboard side) with 3-decks high floor-ceiling windows. From the Atrium are accessible the restaurants Bonsai Sushi, Bonsai Teppanyaki and Punchliner Comedy Club, as well as the intimate Piano Bar 88 (themed venue for sing-a-longs).

Nightlife on Carnival Jubilee

Since your huge Suite on Carnival Jubilee™ affords you VIP status, you're in the priority line when getting on and off the ship… plus Suites come with exclusive perks! Here’s the most affordable way to experience Carnival Jubilee™, without cutting even a single corner in the comfort department. Haute cuisine meets atmosphere at Fahrenheit 555™, a dining experience that stands toe-to-toe with some of the best steakhouses on land. Ours features your choice of steak cuts, lobster, lamb and more… and inside, there’s even a full bar that pours great pairings. These are the building blocks of an amazing experience — delectable elements that combine with great service to offer an evening to remember.

Carnival Jubilee Cruise Review – Day 1

Saying goodbye to some cruise friends who were only onboard for the day, it was back to our regularly scheduled cruise program. Java Blue is the coffee house on Carnival Jubilee serving up all your espresso-based beverages, along with milkshakes. With about an hour until the christening ceremony began, we went back to our stateroom, cabin 12235, to get photos and videos. This balcony stateroom (8D category) is located on the starboard side and is forward of the forward bank of elevators.

The ship has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft) and gas capacity 520 m3. The vessel's bunkering takes ~8 hours and her LNG capacity is enough for ~14 days of operation (navigation and onboard electricity production). During their inaugural seasons, Jubilee's sisterships were homeported in Florida's Port Canaveral (Mardi Gras/2021) and Miami (Celebration/2022). A signature outdoor fun facility is the ropes course SkyCourse (length 600 ft / 183 m).

The project (completed in December 2023) included fixed furniture, air supply connections, electrical works, carpeting, ceiling enhancements, finishing of 1000+ staterooms. All cabins were prefabricated, delivered and installed by the subcontractor EMS PreCab GmbH. In November Carnival announced that Jubilee would be the fleet's first liner offering 5G connectivity/mobile phone service.

Cabanas are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices vary by sailing, but on my voyage, they were $500 per day from 8 a.m. Pool lifts accommodating up to 300 pounds are available for passengers with limited mobility. If you're interested in spending time outdoors working on your tan by the pool, you can do so at one of five onboard pools. If you're seeking a between-meal snack or light bite, try the JavaBlue Cafe on Deck 6 in Grand Central. The cafe offers a sizable menu of specialty coffee beverages and tea, as well as free and for-fee snacks.

You’ve gotta trust us… or you can join us at The Golden Mermaid™, where amazing drinks are just the beginning. Some of the mixological treasures we’re recovered from the deep? Cocktail recipes inspired by precious metals and gemstones, drinks served in exquisite glassware, plus garnishes like edible glitter to remind you of sunlight streaming through the waves from up above!

NEXT-LEVEL FUN IS MAKING BIG HEADLINES

A great alternative for adults is the Serenity area, open only to 18 and older. Located on Deck 18, the area is large, offering sunbeds, padded lounge chairs and clamshells in shade and sun. It also has a book and two hot tubs, and contains Fresh Creations, a made-to-order salad station, as well as a bar.

Guests staying in one of the 98 Havana Cabana rooms get a variety of private perks, including a small pool, a sundeck, patios and outdoor bar. Little kids ages 2-5 can take part in a free Zumbini class — a Zumba-style class created just for kids by Zumba and BabyFirst. The 30-minute class features songs, activities, and special instruments all designed to get kids moving.

While I’ve been known to play a mean game of cruise ship mini-golf, my losing streak continued. But if you are looking for lunch-type options, there is steak and eggs, fried chicken, burgers, and more. Select menu items from Emeril’s Bistro are available for an up-charge as well. The first portion of this tour was a short drive away for snorkeling at Uvas Beach. I relaxed on a complimentary lounge chair while Don set off on the approximately 45-minute guided snorkel where he saw plenty of fish and a small cenote. These Carnival Kitchen classes are available for cruisers to book for $45-$60 per person.

Carnival’s free Hub app is almost a requirement when you’re sailing on Jubilee. You don’t HAVE to have it, but it will make everything much easier. The app offers the daily schedule, allows you to select favorite activities, make reservations and look at menus for each restaurant. If you don’t have the app, you still can do these things, but it might mean phone calls to restaurants or guest services or using your interactive TV in your cabin.

Guests looking for sweets will find them at Cherry on Top — a candy/gift shop. Carnival Jubilee also has a number of other shops where you’ll find things like Carnival logo and ship-specific merchandise, clothing, fine jewelry and watches, cosmetics, fragrance, and bottles of liquor. The ship features an uninterrupted jogging track as well as a fitness center with the usual machines and equipment you’d find in a gym on land. There are a number of activities and amenities on Carnival Jubilee, both complimentary and for an extra cost.

Drink package, but be aware that, because of Texas law, the package isn’t available until the second ay onboard. The package is pretty inclusive, with really only the most premium drinks not covered. It only operates when the ship isn’t in a port, but when it does operate, it’s packed with people playing the slots or table games.

And staterooms aboard Carnival Jubilee™ are packed with innovative changes to both. It's the way the ring-lit vanity mirror lights you evenly and shadow-free as you get ready. And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone!

Forward-view Extended Balcony staterooms are 276 square feet and are located on the same decks; there are 48 of those. Aft-View Extended Balconies have larger balconies at 120 square feet (vs 71 for a forward-view and 62 for an extended). Standard balcony cabins are 249 square feet counting the balcony and can sleep up to four guests. There are 1,042 standard balcony cabins on the ship, and they’re located on decks 9-17.

Love it or hate it, there are throwbacks everywhere you look on Carnival Jubilee. A forever fan of Farcus — I even have one of his piano bar tables in my living room, rescued from Carnival's former Tropicale — I think the design elements (the colors, the decor, the mixture of styles) are brilliant. Here, I'll run through the specifics of what I truly enjoyed while on board, and a few things that gave me pause.

7-Day Western Caribbean Cruise from Galveston

carnival jubilee cruise

This is a highlight on Carnival Jubilee; you’ll want to set your schedule around the shows. My hands felt sticky for hours afterward, no matter how many times I washed them. When I finally went back to my cabin at the end of the night, I was amused to find I had Pop Rocks stuck in my hair. Although some of Carnival's nighttime song-and-dance theater shows can feel a bit dated, cheesy and lackluster, that isn't the case on Carnival Jubilee. At set times, you can head up one deck — via a staircase with a glittering blue wall that evokes the ocean, offset by a suspended school of swimming fish — to a kiosk that allows you to change the location. The vessel's original bell and ship plaque, both from 1986, are on display.

CARNIVAL JUBILEE: NEXT-LEVEL FUN, POWERED BY LNG

Don enjoyed his prime rib, but I was a bit disappointed in the creme brulee as it was very watery. If you are new to Carnival, the cruise line does limit you to two free entrees, with additional plates available for $5 each. This is different than other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean who only limit lobster (to one entree). After snorkeling, there was just enough time for a quick complimentary drink before heading off to our next stop, the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins. Thankfully, this group dinner was quicker than Fahrenheit 555 earlier in the cruise, so we were able to catch Soulbound in the theater. This Playlist Productions show is a supernatural journey through New Orleans with hits like Superstitious.

Carnival Jubilee Cruise Review – Day 2

Rudi’s Seagrill™ is the brainchild of cookbook author and master chef Rudi Sodamin. He has years of experience pleasing palates of vacationers… and this guy loves serving up a smile as much as Carnival does! But he’s serious about seafood, and an evening at Rudi’s proves it through the courses.

Carnival Jubilee Cruise Review – Day 3

Multiple trivia sessions are offered daily, games and contests (hula hoop contests and scavenger hunts, for example) take place throughout the day and dance classes are well-attended. The ship additionally offers mixers of all kind, Bingo and even impromptu sessions up-close magic, courtesy of wandering magicians who will blow your mind. What's nice about Carnival's newer ships is that they offer a choice of more cabin categories than the line's older vessels. The benefits don’t end there — your little girls and boys eat free in most onboard specialty restaurants and get a free evening of Night Owls babysitting service, so you can enjoy a little alone time.

Service on Carnival Jubilee is Overwhelmed, Inconsistent

carnival jubilee cruise

The Shores Zone (midship-aft on deck 8) is themed on seaside scenery (piers and beaches) and features a 3-deck-high (decks 6-7-8) fish art installation. I also checked out the Bolt roller coaster – one of just three at sea – and the ship's new Golden Mermaid and Dr. Inks bars in the ship's "Currents" zone, which features an under-the-sea theme that celebrates ocean life. Carnival Jubilee's main dining rooms feature select items from the onboard steakhouse, available for an additional fee. Traditionally, shipboard dining includes a complimentary Lido Buffet Restaurant.

Carnival Jubilee zones

By the end of 2017, the ship originally launched as MS Jubilee was no more. Food on Carnival Jubilee is good, with some fun surprises that border on great, and the variety is excellent. Entertainment, and a schedule packed with daily activities, is wildly fun and hits on a range that will appeal to almost everyone. At Pixels, passengers can book professional photo sessions as well as look at and purchase their photos that were taken by Carnival’s photographers throughout the cruise. At the Alchemy Bar, passengers can sign up for the Martini Tasting, where bartenders (referred to as “alchemists”) take guests through a flight of mini Martinis of their choice.

They feature Havana-branded towels and bathrobes and a tropical color scheme. Havana Cabana cabins have private outdoor patio areas that are similar to balconies but instead of having views of the ocean, they face a public walkway in front of the ocean. In addition to a fun interior design, the Family Harbor oceanview cabins and suites are unique in that they feature two bathrooms. The largest includes a shower, toilet, and sink, while a separate bath has a junior tub and sink. These cabins have a nautical flag motif and include one free Night Owls evening at Camp Ocean. The Family Harbor Lounge includes breakfast, snacks, movies, and games.

The top decks belong to Carnival Jubilee's Lido and Ultimate Playground zones. The former houses the ship's main pool, along with the RedFrog Tiki Bar, BlueIguana Cantina and Guy's Burger Joint. The ship's Grand Central zone, which houses Center Stage, also serves as an entertainment venue. Although no full shows were offered there during my sailing, I did catch a peek at the cast during rehearsal for a special holiday performance. Supervised programming is offered certain hours every day, including games and scavenger hunts, movies, karaoke, video gaming and arts and crafts.

Included with your cruise fare:

This neighborhood is linked via 2-deck-high Promenade with "The Golden Mermaid" (bar lounge offering hand-crafted cocktails and live music). Since Don had some afternoon meetings for work, we headed back onboard around noontime. We continued checking off casual dining spots by grabbing lunch at Coastal Slice and Beach Buns in the new The Shores zone. This zone has a seaside boardwalk vibe, and it’s also the late night snack spot. Well, since it was approaching lunchtime, why not continue our Mexican trend at Chibang.

Both were quite good; mine even came with a Swedish Fish and Don’s squid ink. Tomorrow was another sea day, but we still had plenty to accomplish around the ship. When we joined the waitlist, it gave us an approximate wait time. However, when we arrived at the MDR about 20 minutes later, we were informed that we were still number ten in queue. Unfortunately, this would not give us enough time to eat and be ready for our scheduled media activities of the day. Out of dinner within about 75 minutes, we made a pitstop back to our cabin, where we watched some of the sailaway from our balcony.

Enjoy selections like seafood bisque and crab-stuffed lobster tail imperial — all served with an elegant flair that pays proper tribute to the beauty of the ocean from which so much fun, and flavor, arises. At Cucina del Capitano® on Carnival Jubilee™, who you’ve got gathered around the table is truly as important as what’s being served there. At our table you’ll enjoy delicious Italian favorites — we serve them family-style because we know that sharing large plates and sharing tales of your day’s adventures goes hand-in-hand. Speaking of which, our walls are adorned with old snapshots from our officers’ family albums, proving that the rustic Italian-farmhouse atmosphere definitely isn’t for show. The suggested attire for women on such nights is cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses. Passengers who wish to avoid dressing up can enjoy dinner in any of the casual eateries aboard.

SkyCourse is part of the SportSquare (sports complex) with an indoor hangout, mini-bowling, mini-golf course, The Clubhouse, Ping-Pong area with tables, jogging track, interactive sports gaming, arcade basketball. The sisterships Mardi Gras, Celebration and Jubilee have CCL fleet's largest Atriums and open-deck areas. Nonetheless, we were escorted off the ship and were through CBP in no time. The Galveston cruise terminal has facial recognition meaning you can breeze through without ever having to take out your passport. We did attempt to try Fresh Creations for lunch, but the line seemed endless most of the afternoon with guests stating they waited up to 30 minutes.

Simply walk up to order at the counter, have a seat and a waiter will take over from there. Both serve the same menu for dinner, but only the larger Pacific Restaurant is open for Sea Day Brunch on sea days and breakfast (but not lunch) on port days. One of the best ways Carnival provides value to its customers is through its food offerings.

The lobster macaroni and cheese was the perfect indulgence to start my meal, and I followed it up with a delicious crab cake. Excellent added-fee options include steak, seafood and teppanyaki, which might be worth trying if you're celebrating a special occasion or feeling like a splurge. Done up in bright, tropical colors, these rooms offer extended outdoor lounge space and private access to the Havana Pool and Bar area.
